GOTHIKA

Bad moon's rising,
Baleful stars come out;
Roses in the garden
Wither on the stalk.

Screeching ravens encircle
The church tower tonight.
A sudden blast of icy wind
Across Arford common howls.

Within the woods a glowing
Ball of fire appears.
As it rises in the pitch black sky,
You're filled with abject fear.

So run, run, my pretty one
Down Beech Hill's ancient track,
Before Old Nick takes mortal form
To your living Soul devour.

For can't you hear the chanting
Of Satanists pledging you
In exchange for their infernal power
In a sacrificial rite?

As the last virgin in Headley Parish
You are the rarest prize.
So run, run, my pretty one...
And never look back.

There has been an oral tradition of the dark arts being practiced in Arford woods for many centuries.
Both my mother and I have personally witnessed this ball of fire phenomenon.
It was extremely unnerving!

  1. This is to be saved for a dark evening alone, or maybe not☺ I love it. The images created by the words have me wanting to get out my darkest inks and a few colors for the fire.

It is one of those things that once witnessed, is never forgotten. It was so scary.

    1. Hehe...that was my aim, dear lady!
Seriously though, we really have seen it...and yes, it was chilling. Terrifyingly chilling!
I still go miles out of my way, rather than pass that way again at night...:/

    2. Stay far away from there dear lady! What do you think the fire ball is?

    3. I honestly have no idea!
It is a rather eerie place - even in daylight (possibly due to the power of suggestion), but as to the fire ball...it was huge, I'd say about a metre and a half across.
My friend and I intend to visit the area at hallowe'en this year, just to see if it is repeated. She grew up on the edge of the wood, but has never seen it.
      I will keep you posted!

    1. Many thanks, Nyssa!
It certainly is a mystery. I was seventeen when I witnessed this, and it is etched in my memory as clearly as if it were only yesterday. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about it! xxx

    1. Thank you, Dave.
As I said to Rose, my friend and I intend to visit the area in October. If there is another sighting, I will attempt to photograph it...only hope I don't end up with a curse on my head though! Haha :D
