THE CHARMER

Oh master of illusion,
Enchanter of women
With starry vision
Needfully driven;

You rule unrivalled
Seduction's arena,
Stealing from others
Sisters, wives, lovers,

By filling their minds
With amorous fables
That override reason
To induce faith's treason.

And you display not the slightest
Shred of remorse
For lives torn apart
Nor each broken heart

That your moonstruck magic
Leaves behind,
When pastures new
Beckon to you:

A pretty face and flaming hair.
Shapely legs - she's the one.
This time for sure
You'll want no more.

Then in the morning
Two lovers awaken
In the golden flow
Of afterglow.

But her perfect body
Deified by night,
Grows mediocre by day
So you hasten away

To find another
Altogether better,
Where you woo and win
Another heart to bin.

Yet still we fall, fall,
God knows why we fall.
But tragically we do
Fall victim to you.

  2. Sounds like this poem was written about a heartbreaker...I think we can all relate to coming into contact with one or two of these in our lifetime :)

    1. Yes, sadly we all seem to have been here at sometime in our lives, don't we?
This was a distant (thank goodness!) memory resurfacing here, and it means a lot to know I'm not alone in this and am therefore not the failure I believed myself to be at the time.
      Many thanks, Keith:)

  4. These charmers come in both genders…
I so enjoyed this, both as a wonderfully developed poem and for the insight into those we all have seen and/or experienced.

    1. Many thanks Anthony.
Yes, I have no doubt that they come in both genders, but I suppose I am a little biased as I have only experienced them in the male variety! Haha :D

  5. Ygraine, Ygraine, Ygraine! Demonstrably beautiful! Just fantastic!

Unmasked...but the snake must be charmed before the strike. And though not displayed, remorse hides masked to induce faith's sight.

Aren't you glad there's someone there to catch us when we fall?! 0;^)

    1. Oh Gnome, you are so kind...thank you!

I hadn't looked at it like that before, but now you come to mention it...the snake must be charmed before the strike...or, as my late father used to say...it takes two to tango!
I could have walked away, but I chose to stay. Love...or ego?
      Or masochism?
Perhaps it's best not to probe too deeply!

If only there had been someone to catch me when I fell.
      That ground was so hard.....:(

  7. I thought the same as Anthony, that charmers come in both genders -- and both genders fall victim. But a poem to stop one in one's tracks. Very Thought-provoking. We begin by thinking we know all about such things, but your vivid images suggest otherwise.

    1. Do you know, Dave, I used to wear my heart on my sleeve. So when I found myself up against someone less transparent it all too often ended in tears...and it wasn't just the once either!
If time has taught me nothing else, I have at least learned to exercise caution!

I suppose none of us will ever fully understand how another person's mind works, and it is probably best not to try...we may not like what we find! Haha:D

Many thanks for your insightful comment.
      I so appreciate that.:)

  8. A thoughtful beauty this one. Ahhh the heartbreaker some professional - others by chance - and a special few become heartbreakers due to the actual love and yearning in their
    own souls.
Thank you for writing this lovely poem for me to ponder.

    1. Thank you so much Paige.
I've begun to think most heartbreakers really are driven by the yearning in their own Souls...are searching for that perfect "something" that doesn't actually exist on the Earth plane.
      They are poor, lost Souls!

  9. Terrific write Ygraine! It is always such a treat to read your work. Sometimes it is the chase that the charmer yearns for and once he/she has managed to charm his/her way into someone's heart etc They lose interest and look for the next thrill :)

  10. I think you've hit the nail right on the head there, Rose!
It does seem to be the thrill of the chase in most cases, doesn't it?
Ah, but how to get around that...

    Thank you so much x

  13. It must be in our longing that we choose to step over that rocky Edge.
The silver-tongued devil may say his piece, the cocky loverboy might act out his, but in the end it is our own choice.
However, the Edge has a seductiveness altogether its own ...
