A May shower. A single drop
absorbing into parched leather sleeve.
Downpour. Tender spring leaves
dancing to it's tune.
Deluge. Running down
the back of your collar.
Heavy drops colliding
with concrete path:
an explosion of tiny droplets
leaping at the sky.
Laburnum flowers shudder
as if to dinosaur footfalls,
while curls in human hair
stretch and unravel.
There is power in heavy rain,
in it's ability to change things:
to evacuate the park, to empty streets
into bus shelters and shop doorways.
A car door slams and a man runs out
under a giant black umbrella.
By a wooden fence a wild orchid
absorbs the rain thirstily,
it's intricately spotted leaves like tongues
swallowing, savouring the moment.
Rumble of thunder.
Two young lovers kissing
under an Oak tree, trembling with emotion.
Windscreens of parked cars
are patterned with yellow tide marks
of wasted pollen, just as
black mascara has reinvented my face,
mimicing the hand of Picasso.

we have been pounded with heavy rains the last couple days...in the after of the storm it all smells so fresh...the wet earth scoured clean by the hard rain....that last stanza is really cool....the young lovers....and an interesting contrast with your own running mascara...and picasso! smiles.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that post-storm fresh smell absolutely invigorating?
DeleteI so love going outdoors after a storm, and just breathing it in.
Ha...Picasso...as soon as I caught sight of my reflection, he came to mind *smiles*
Many thanks, Brian.:)
Ygraine,
ReplyDeleteI have always loved a rainy day, something we so seldom get here in Colorado and actually rain is needed very badly as we are in drought now.
Last summer was the worst season for fires (so many, many houses burnt down) and I am actually praying for rain now.
I kind of 'got lost' in the beautiful imagery of your words.
Beautifully written.
Hugs
xx
If only I could send some of our endless rain over to you...it seems so unfair to have such an abundance of it, while you so desperately need some...all those dreadful fires of last year...I remember seeing it on the news here.
DeleteI do so hope you have a better summer this year.
Thank you so much for your kind comment, Margie.
It is truly appreciated.:)
Hugs xxx
My favourite Love Story ...ever!!!! you're awesome Ygraine, xo

DeleteI’m drenched now in your words. You capture the experience so well. The last line is brilliant..
ReplyDeleteSeriously...I really did resemble one of his creations so much that I burst into a fit of giggles *smiles*...
DeleteThank you so much, Anthony!
Your words mean so much...:)
Yea, i agree with Anthony. That last line is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you TUG...so much! :)
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons why I loved your poem, but one stood out. In Cuba getting caught in the first May shower is meant to bring good luck. I got soaked in your verses, so I expect good luck now! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Really?
DeleteOh wish I lived in Cuba...*smiles*...and I'm sending you all the good luck I can!!
Many thanks CIL.
Greetings from the New Forest :)

DeleteBig Hugs back! xxx
and i left another comment about WWW having a breakdown cause everyone is having trouble it says your comment was published but it's not there and then later on it's there 3 times.....and it tells you your comment was published, but it doesn't show it, i guess it's having a delayed reaction....and that's why suddenly 3 comments pop up, watch later bet there's two new comments from me...it's happening everywhere/ uh oh is the WWW crashing around the world, what a disaster that would be, good thing I have your address I could write lol
ReplyDeleteI honestly thought it was just me, or this being a poor connection area...but perhaps, as you say, it's a worldwide thing.
DeleteImagine if it did crash totally...yes...thank goodness for old fashioned addresses! lol
PS I am just popping over to your blogs...I wonder if I'll make it today...:/
Hugs xxx
