FLIGHT BA4793

Flying in towards Heathrow,
passing over our street.

From high up here in Hampshire airspace,
the distant landscape below

is carved by hedgerows and motorways
into a patchwork of fields

with miniature homesteads dotted
here and there, as if created

by Vincent's finest brush and pallet
on one of his less manic days.

Most of these are invisible by road.
Even the small towns, like Petersfield

and Liss, look so different from here -
more sprawling, less contained.

And I know you're down there somewhere.
Checking my watch, I realise

you'll be on your way to work by now.
So I strain my eyes for a glimpse

of your BMW speeding along the A3
among all those other tiny dots

snaking their way to London
to begin another day in the office

with it's deadline stresses that hourly shorten life.
And I wish you were here with me instead,

and we were young again and just married.
I could fly then, you know, without the need

for this huge silver bird to transport me to paradise.
It lived in my heart then,

when we held hands and gazed
into each others eyes...unlike today,

when my sole purpose for coming home
is to sign our final divorce papers.

  1. Hopefully just a good story in these well placed words. I like the drama portrayed, ending in the sad surprise.

    1. Yes, just a story, although inspired by the sad break-ups I observe all around me.
A sad fact of contemporary life, I guess...:/

      Many thanks :)

  2. There is a glad beauty here despite the melancholy closing exposition. An excellent irony, and an understated astonishment of sitting in a chair in the sky. Got to me.

    1. Oh thank you, Geo...I love how you have found the positive in this sad tale. Perhaps I "viewed" the scene from the air because I couldn't bear the pain of being any closer to the situation.
I wonder what that says about my level of bravery! ;)

      Many thanks :)

    1. I have been there once, Sweetie, but thankfully not this time.
This was triggered by the break-up of someone I know...and the suffering I remember...the two just came together in an overwhelming urge to express the sadness.
      Thank you so much...:)

    1. Oh thank you, dear friend...you are so kind!
As I explained to Lorraine, fortunately my suffering in this way is a very old scar...but it was opened up by a recent break-up I heard of.
      It is so sad...

Do hope all is well with you:)

  5. The ending was sad, obviously, but the beginning reminded me of the first time I arrived in Britain (Gatwick, as it happens) and I saw the same landscape from the sky. What a marvellous land, I though! And so it turned out to be.

    Greetings from London.

    1. Oh wow...I hadn't though of that...of someone coming here to start a new life and witnessing that same beautiful landscape (that I am guilty of taking for granted sometimes!).
Thank you...for opening my eyes...and lifting my Spirits!

So good to have you back...you have been sorely missed...:)

    1. How true!
Yes, I do believe every ending is a doorway to a new beginning...it took me a long time to realise that, but it is true!
      Thank you so much...:)
Do hope your wasp stings are much better now!
