THE SQUATTER

The squatter you never knew you had
in your spare room
is watching with indifferent eyes

from the shadows at three in the morning.
He hasn't the capacity
to feel for your suffering:

that glittering
of falling teardrops

that he will never experience,
being so ruthless a predator
without a shred of humanity.

The killer instinct is all-absorbing -
you are instantly forgotten
as Kamikaze fly

dives into sticky triangle
of house spider web...

    1. Oh thank you, dearest Jan...you are so kind!
I took this photo of the spider on Austin's hand when he was rescuing me last last year...I would never have dared to go anywhere near a spider, let alone pick one up!
In spite of my intense fear of them, I do find them fascinating...and would never dream of hurting one.:)

      Much Love & Hugs xoxoxo

  2. I delight in your poem and shudder a bit at the photo (slightly arachnophobic). I catch them with a cup and card and release them undamaged into the wild. They're so beautiful.

    1. I too capture them and let them go, unless I decide to let be.

    2. Only "slightly arachnophobic"?? I am full-blown!!
I do find them beautiful too, and would never dream of hurting them...there is just this overwhelming, irrational fear.
      Many thanks, Geo.:)

Bravo, Lon...too many people kill spiders out of either revulsion or fear...and that is really sad.
      I could never do that.

  3. Yes, creepy crawly good Ygraine. that is some big spider. I bet even Mr. Cheddar would take a step back from that one. Teeheee...

    1. Wish I knew why they scare me so much. I'd love to be able to pick one up like that...but I just can't do it.
Maybe I'll try hypnosis...would certainly improve my life. Every autumn I live in utter terror! lol

      Many thanks, Geraldine!

    1. Thank you, Anthony!:)
If I possessed your artistic talent, I would sketch the recurring nightmare I keep having in which I am caught in a giant web. I feel a vibration, then this gigantic spider approaches...fortunately, I always wake at that point...
      Yes, definitely need hypnosis! lol

  8. That's such a beautiful spider, reminds me of the one I captured and let go, except the one I set free one summer morning was about twice that size and completely black.

    1. We have those really big ones in the house here too sometimes, mainly in August and September when they emerge from the shadows in search of a mate. I was sitting and watching TV one evening, just minding my own business, when a spider as big as the palm of my hand ran across the floor.
I was frozen with fear! Such a coward!! lol ;)

  10. beautiful and insightful as always. Spiders in the desert are often feared. Tarantulas are not poisonous and make great companions. I had one in my back yard for several years.

In spite of my fear, I do find Tarantulas really beautiful. I love to watch them, but still couldn't bear to touch one or have it crawl on my hand.
This is one fear I would like to someday overcome...

      Have a Great day! :)

    1. Oh don't!!
Black hairy ones and spindly hunting ones are scary enough...but "squishy blob" ones?
