PREMONITION

A fisherman's widow scans the horizon
from Port Quin's shore in eighteen-fifteen,
and tonight I stand here beside her fretting,
battered by gales and forty foot waves.

The centuries between us dissolve before dawn
as The Voyager head-butts the ocean floor.
Oh the news when it comes is a foregone conclusion -
I knew when I saw her I'd see him no more...

  2. Just thinking how it must have been for those poor women...never knowing if they'd ever see their menfolk again every time they left for work.
    I guess it isn't a lot safer a profession even today.:/

Many thanks for sharing your magical perception, Doug...oh that ship's wake...brings me out in goose bumps! *smiles*:))

  4. Dearest Ygraine, how you have transported me to the edge of the earth...overlooking the sea, barely breathing, tense, watching for a sail to appear on the horizon.
    Beautifully written, dear friend~

That was so very deeply written my friend, I can just imagine how that must have really placed those women on edge.

    1. Yes, must have been a really difficult life, Lon.
When you stand alone there on that shore, you can almost feel their anxiety reaching out to you across the centuries. It is so surreal...
      Many thanks, my Friend.:))

As you know, I don't usually write such short poems as I find it difficult to express myself in few words...but this one just seemed to write itself!
