Over centuries, slowly
creeping. Discreetly,
very quietly,
our expanding forms
take hold on rocks,
creep over the gravestones.
No one questions
nor halts our progress,
other organisms make room.
Soft tendrils adhere
to hard surfaces,
imperceptibly melding
with even the mighty Oaks.
Our power is in our resilience,
our footprint is indelible.
Although non-malicious,
we breech all defences,
invade the crooks and crannies.
We feed on moisture,
on sunlight, air;
asking
very little,
only to exist, to be.
We are legion.
We are unintentionally,
subtly, pernicious:
we can be poisonous -
but only in self-defence.
In spite of our meekness, though,
we are formidable.
We are
relentlessly engulfing the Earth
in green and yellow.
No one has seen it coming
so, soon,
our conquest will be complete...
Really amazing !!

Love your poem - I remember seeing a documentary of what it would look like if nature took over place where humans once lived. You described it well.
ReplyDeleteI just sat there, gazing at this spectacular sight, and mused about how it would be if moss had human-like intelligence. What would it be thinking? What would be it's objective? And this is what I came up with! LOL
DeleteSo glad you liked this, Sandy...and thank you so much.:))
Enjoyed. As an architect I looked forward to the moss taking hold, healing the wounds caused by construction, establishing permanence.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does have that amazing quality, doesn't it...to heal the earth's scars and remind us of the power of Nature to overcome all obstacles?
DeleteThank you so much.:))
Prophetic words. It will still be here when we are long gone.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Now that is a fact...it does seem to have an enormous lifespan...and to be much more resilient to diseases than we will ever be!
DeleteMany thanks, CiL!
Greetings from a sunny (yes, I DID say "sunny") Hampshire! *smiles*
... my love and i had and raised our kids in this old prairie house way back when ... many stories could be told about those times, friend Yggy ... now, everybody moved on to their separate lives ... but the house is still there ... like it's waiting for something ... ya ... smiles ... Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteThat sense of "waiting"...absolutely...maybe anticipating a return to the way things were...like moss...awaiting a return to the purity of it's prehistoric origins...before all the pollution.;)
DeleteThank you, Cat...so much!
Much Love & Hugs xoxoxo
i deeply enjoyed your beautiful words.moss is inner sorrows of them who time brings out and display otherwise who wants to show how full of grieves and pain he is

I believe we grow on others including myself seeing I believe we're all interconnected.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of life like that, Lon...but that is so true, we do indeed!
DeleteI guess that is why it pains me so much when I witness pain or injustice...almost a sense of being responsible personally for others' cruelty.
Perhaps, by being non active, I am.:/
Many thanks, my Friend.:))
