Is there ever a time you care
that I am no longer there?
And have your nights ever been
haunted by my face unseen?
Or have you forgotten that distant time
when you promised you'd always be mine:
how as we strolled hand-in-hand
along Sandwood Bay upon golden sand,
you stopped to hug me close to you
and ask if I could love you too?
Oh how we loved upon that shore -
how all night long I begged for more...
So what went wrong between then and now?
For I cannot pinpoint exactly how
it fell apart and broke my heart,
and we were forced to live apart.
And I wonder if that lonely shore
will harbour the phantoms for evermore
of two young lovers from an earlier time
who dance there still to the surf's endless rhyme.
that I am no longer there?
And have your nights ever been
haunted by my face unseen?
Or have you forgotten that distant time
when you promised you'd always be mine:
how as we strolled hand-in-hand
along Sandwood Bay upon golden sand,

Ah the broken promises of love...can be painful indeed. You captured it quite perfectly here my friend.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you Keith...I guess we've all been here sometime or another.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me it's an inescapable part of being alive!
"And I wonder if that lonely shore

Wonderfully expressed lines .... To A Lost Love, to a young
love.
I don't think we ever forget those we have loved or lost.
But broken hearts can mend, thank the heavens for that.
I hope yours has, Ygraine

Thank you Margie...yes, I think mine has - except each loss undoubtedly does leave a scar deep inside, doesn't it?
DeleteIt helps to get the memory out of my head and into words though.

ReplyDeleteYes...I can see that now. Love can be a paradox - more deeply felt after it is lost!
DeleteThank you so much Lorraine:)
Wonderful poem. Had me thinking times I thought would never change.. But of course, they did.
ReplyDelete...and there lies the poignancy!
DeleteIf only we could fully appreciate what we have whilst still with the person...or perhaps I am the only one to see it this way?!
