EXECUTION

Chainsaw
whose sickening screech masks the cries
of trees in agony,
it's echoes transcending
the vast suburban landscape.

Their sap
flows like globules of blood,
like amber crystal balls
striving to form pictures
that show us how it feels

when cold steel slices
through living tissue,
is chewed by metal teeth
to expose wood rings
that tell of long lives

cut short without compassion
to make way for yet another highway.
What felony did any of these poor unfortunates commit
that they should be condemned without trial
to such a barbaric mass execution?

I could never say it as well as you do, because the pain of all those beautiful Century old oaks and tress , hurts me to a level that is deeper than I can say, this made me cry, but it's important to say it, everytime i hear a chainsaw i cringe....I love trees so much, I can't bear their pain...

    1. Oh Sweetie...this is happening on the edge of our town, so I have to pass the carnage every time I go out. It really is heartbreaking...I do hear the cries within the chainsaw's screech - in my heart, at least...and it hurts...so much.
Thank you Sweetie, for understanding...and for caring...

We had an neighbor in our old neighborhood that had some of the most beautiful trees in her front yard and they were very old and provided magnificent shade.
One morning I woke up to find them all gone, she had them all cut down, I was heartbroken!
Your poem kind of broke my heart too!
    I love trees!
Your poem speaks of 'your love for them too'
So well written , thank you!

    1. Oh Margie, I do so love trees...and the pain of seeing them felled is sometimes too much to bear. I just had to record my feelings on this subject...we really didn't need this road...
Thank you so much for understanding, dear friend. It really helps.

  3. heartbreaking...especially when you consider they are probably being taken out to put in a new strip mall....or row houses when so many sit empty already...or another highway to get us from here to there....but then when they are all gone. where will we go

    1. You've really "hit the nail on the head", Brian.
A giant housing and shopping complex is the reason for all this slaughter...and there is already a disused army facility comprising training areas and housing. Why do they not utilize these buildings, instead of flattening them and building more?
And why do they need another service road, when all that is needed is to repair the existing one? We really didn't need this devastation.
And I so agree...what happens when all the trees are gone...where will we find the oxygen we breathe...why can those in power not foresee the future??
      Many thanks, Brian.

  4. __Well said... and I'm truly against indiscriminate harvests, and among all the adjacent and additional failures we humans cause and face, we must halt our progress toward Soylent Green,,

    1. You sum it up so eloquently, Magyar!
We feel the approaching ecological disaster, yet no one in power will listen. Sadly, it seems finance is the only motive for anything these days.
Most people in our town voted against this redevelopment...yet it is still going ahead...:(

      Thank you so much.

  5. This is a trend that we follow and welcome the globalized world. When one thing appears, it is sadly the woods (trees) and forests that gets disappeared to give some space.

  8. This is deeply touching, Ygraine, and I absolutely hate it when they cut down the trees, I keep thinking of the poor birds who made these trees their home and took such a long time to build a nest and hatch and feed their young. Thank you for being...you. You are such a lovely and compassionate human being.

    1. Oh Linda...your kind words have touched me deeply...and your understanding is truly appreciated. Thank you...from the bottom of my heart.
I was thinking of the birds too. I have been watching them build their nests in our hedges and in the ivy that grows on the front wall of our house...and I was dreadfully concerned for all those who must have been building in those poor trees. Now where will they go? Soon they will run out of suitable places.
The balance of Nature is being destroyed daily.
      It is all so sad...:(

  10. Hello Ygraine,
It's always bad to see that trees to make way for a highway.
The governing men demolish nature. You've made a good shot.

    Hugs and many greetings,
    Marco

    1. Hi Marco,
We are fortunate to have a large area of woodland around us here...but I am beginning to wonder for how much longer. It is gradually being swallowed up by redevelopment - so much of which is really unnecessary.
Perhaps I should stand for local government and try to make a difference...
      Many thanks...and Big Hugs:)

  13. On our beautiful prairies, trees that furnished shade for livestock and ranchers for centuries are being cut down by housing tract developers who name the new streets Oak, Elm, etc., after trees they've torn from the earth. I believe lobotomies are required for the profession.

    1. I've never understood that either, Geo...in their infinite wisdom they cut all the trees, then name the streets after them...
      adding insult to injury!
Yes, lobotomies could well be the only salvation...

      Many thanks:)

  18. Olá, infelizmente o poder financeiro que só olha aos lucros, são impiedosos na destruição, sabemos que o equilíbrio do ecossistema depende da natureza, mesmo assim continuam a destruir a mesma.

    1. Yes, it is really frightening, isn't it?
When we first moved here, we were living in the centre of a forest...now we are in the centre of a vast town, that is growing far too rapidly.
Oh how I miss the trees...:(

      Many thanks, AG.:)
