INTO THE FIRE

The candle flame dances in a sudden breeze:
a crazy tango, frantic, urgent.
Her heart joins in - leaping, spiralling,
while she lies there frozen rigid,
crucified by guilt.

She hears his footfalls on the stair,
wants to run, to escape the inevitable.
Yet there on the bed she remains, transfixed, unable to fight it.
Oh she knows how wrong this is,
but her body so desperately craves his.

As he's framed in the doorway, the candle flame
grows to encompass the sun
and her eyes, her lungs,
are burned to cinders.
Dear God, what can she do?

The room turns golden. She's somewhere else
in ecstasy. Separation of mind and body
somehow makes acceptable what happens here
once a week, every week.
This is what she lives for.

Oh she knows what he is - all those other women.
But it's OK, because she's only an observer.
When she leaves this hotel room,
tonight's liaison will never have happened
because she was on a girl's night out, miles from here.

And tomorrow he'll make love to his wife,
while she'll be with her husband,
assuring him she would never even look at another man.
Two strangers will again be living separate lives...
but deep inside her the fire rages on.

  2. Rather heart breaking. To love and be so caught up in the lust, but at the same time knowing it is wrong. It can become like a drug, that feeling of love and satiation. As with most addictions it can take us to some strange places. I wonder though if she does not feel the emptiness in the never truly fulfilled love.

  3. Oh absolutely...I could actually feel the emptiness as I wrote, in spite of it being merely a fictional piece.
    I was addictive...yet unnerving...

    Many thanks, "X"

  4. Fantastic writing, dear Ygraine!!!
I felt guilty...as if I were a witness to their passion.
Passion and pleasure for a moment...guilt for the rest of their lives.
    So sad~

    Lots of hugs and love...

  5. Hi Ygraine! a mesmerizing journey being aware of her inner-thoughts/feelings/rationalizations...this poem felt like it had alot of velocity-motion to it.....it moved rapidly as I read it.. it carried alot of complex-energy..I always seem to feel the energy-passion in your poems..I don't know how else to describe it..but I love the way your writing flows and sweeps me up into a current of mood-ideas and fantastic imagery .
    Wishing you a magical day!

  11. Two strangers will again be living separate lies.
__The introduction to your closing line... might 'easily be read' in that fashion.

__Your poem... such a true painting of human frailty. _m

    Bom domingo

    1. Think I know what you mean...yes, there is always a reason why such things happen...one person alone can't take the whole of the blame.. when something is missing in a relationship.
      So happy you enjoyed! :)

      Many thanks.:))

  13. Sometimes the burning flame within ones soul is unable to be put out.

Look at me, a Witch, in which I am, which has a dark fiery soul, but no matter how I've tried to escape who I am, my flame only gets higher.

  14. Well worded poem of lust and infidelity. Secret passions always keep burning wildly and explode most unexpectedly. This clandestine affair will not be so consuming if it was normal. But extra marital affairs make people dizzy and blinds all reasonableness.

Well crafted poem. I enjoyed it immensely.

This poem reminded me of the novel Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

    Best wishes

I have never read Anna Karenina, but have recently recorded the movie. I am doubly looking forward to watching it when I return home in a week or so now!
