IMPRESSIONS OF BODIAM

Robins and blackbirds sing from the trees
and magpies call from mid-air,
while butterflies ride the gentle breeze
home to their summer lair.

Wild deer come to gaze from here
upon this wondrous sight
of castle walls that yesteryear
were home to a medieval Knight.

Oh how I wish I could cheat time
and quietly slip inside
Bodiam's history most sublime
to watch the jousters ride.

For one would steal my heart I'm sure
and become my lover true,
after he'd achieved the highest score
whilst displaying my colours in lieu.

Then later, after the lavish bonquet
held in his honour that night
we'd ride off into the crimson sunset -
aah, such utter delight!

And when we returned his Lady I'd be:
mistress of all I survey,
and draped in silks this wannabe
would finally have her day...

But alas for fantasies, it's here I'm stuck
in century twenty-first,
where chivalry's defunct along with luck
and there's only unquenchable thirst.

Hi guys...apologies for being absent so long, but so much happening in my life at present that I've been tied up.
This is a difficult time, but I will visit you as often as I possibly can...I promise. :)

  1. I wonder if the dreams and fantasy of yesteryear have really changed? Is not the attempt to thrust the dark ages upon us again being floated in such disguised seas of flowing liquid fantasies and dreams, by the same builders of those castle walls?
Wonderful poem… Been thinking too much lately about castle walls☺

    1. You know...I really don't think they have!
I'm willing to bet my life that if we could return to those times...we'd find human yearnings and aspirations not a great deal different to our own.
Yes...there is something about castle walls, isn't there?
They have the power either to imprison or protect - or in my case, fascinate and provide a means of escape from mental chains! ;)

      Many thanks.:)

  2. Very beautiful, dear Ygraine. To dream of yesteryear lets my soul live in today's dreary world of everyday chaos and the naysayers to fantasies, dreams and magic. Bring on the castles and their dragons and knights...

Please do not worry about us. We are devoted and will await your return whenever possible. You and your prince are in my thoughts and my prayers~

  6. Wonderful poem about a wonderful place. I too have wished I could transport myself 6 centuries back to Bodiam, but then I remember refrigeration and antibiotics. I guess I'm the main reason I stick in this century and miss the pageantry of the lists. But I can imagine, and appreciate the way you bring those events, the colors and motion to life.

    1. Gosh...I hadn't considered those things!
I can't imagine life without refrigeration or antibiotics...I guess life expectancy would halve...and that is a conservative estimate.:/
Think you've helped me to see the positive side of contemporary life!

      Many thanks, Geo.:))

  12. I am glad to know that you are well. I would love to visit a castle one day again. So many stories in those halls. Abandoned by time.

I hope life is not too hard on you. Need anything, let me know.

    1. There is something decidedly magical about castles, isn't there?
I think it's the fact that so many generations have passed within their ancient walls...and when the conditions are right, we can feel their presence and catch a glimpse into their lives.

Thank you so much for your support...it truly means so much to me...:)

      Have a great day.:))
