THE ANCESTORS

Now, they are dust
blown to the four winds
that toss the boughs of trees
and ripple spiders' webs
in hidden corners.

Their language is obsolete
to we, the deaf,
who can no longer hear
beyond our tablet speakers
nor see beyond our phone screens
to where they dwell in ether.

Yet, they are ever watchful
as they wait to reawaken in us the old ways
through our names' syllables
and in our dreams,
where conscious trivia has no place
and awareness no constraints.
Today, it is only here they can reach us,
through abstract image and metaphor...
and make us whole once more.

  5. I wonder how many could list ancestors beyond 2 generations back. Do people really care? beyond the screen of their phone or tablet, even really about a generation back? Me thinks we have lost the importance of understanding where we came from.

    1. Very few, I imagine (myself included) have any knowledge of our ancestors beyond our grandparents. Quite sad really. I keep promising myself I will begin researching mine...but then more pressing occupations always seem to take precedence...:/
      One day, though...

      Many thanks, "X" :)

  6. Beautiful and touching, dearest Ygraine.
Who we are and where we come from is something that should be given more thought. I know that because we have researched our family tree that we know of some of our past~

  7. I love these lines and your layered meanings throughout:

    "Their language is obsolete"
"to where they dwell in ether"
"as they wait to reawaken in us the old ways
    through our names' syllables"

    You are an excellent poet.

  10. I admire the direction of this poem. When we dream of those whose lives preceded ours, it does appear a part of our minds --something to which all time is one moment-- that is not entirely conscious, is expressing itself in metaphor. I wake and remember as best I can and feel some communication occurred. I hope these spirits wake in their own mornings, their own lives, and feel they've touched the future.

    1. I really suspect they do, Geo.
I remember some years ago having an extremely vivid dream, that seemed much more than a dream, in which I found myself many years in the future. I was suffering some kind of past life trauma and was in a hospital being treated by doctors.
One of them began hypnotizing me...and the last words I heard were, "You will now return to the deep and distant past"...and I immediately awoke in my bed, in the present time.
The whole "experience" seemed SO real...

      Many thanks.:))

I really, really must find the time to trace mine...soon!
This poem was prompted by the discovery of an old family photo in the attic...

Thank you so much, my dear friend.:)

this particular speaks to me today:

  17. Some of us are so deeply controlled by >repetition<, that >unawareness of brain control.<
__Last night, though not watching, I was overcome by the sounds of TV ads; repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat... and more repetition_!
__I stepped outside to the crickets songs, again I was overcome. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat... and more repetition_!
__My guess is you know where I stayed and listened.

"Beyond our tablet speakers," "Beyond our phone screens" "Awareness has no constraints" > Imagination, inspired by that, that was <.

    in the dark
    the crickets say what was
    tomorrow

__Sorry to take so much space "Y", I just loved your true verse_! _M
