ACORN FALL

In a garden, I'm sitting
on the wall beside the fish pond.
A giant oak tree towers high
above me, heavily laden.
An occasional acorn plops
into the water, displacing the algae,
and huge Koi faces appear in the gaps,
intrigued by these unfamiliar disturbances.

Pillow cases and duvet covers
are hanging on a washing line nearby.
All those stories they could tell:
of bodies sleeping, restless, or making love
within crisp cotton. Intimate secrets
none but the genuine psychometrist will ever learn.

My gaze returns to the pond. The fish
have retreated, leaving dark empty spaces.
Sun dips behind pavilion roof,
bathing the garden in shadows
and pre-autumnal coolness.

Then a barrage of acorns
shatters the remaining patches of algae.
Pond population dives for the safety of the depths
as the final glow of daylight
traces their paths in rippling silver...
momentarily highlighting the faces of the Gods.

Hi Guys,
I am taking a short break now. I will miss you and will catch up with you all again soon.
Meanwhile...have a brilliant week!:))

  1. It is an interesting contrast between the pond and the bedsheets. Both have stories. One about us, another about nature. And I wonder how different they are. I find peace in the nature, and intensity in ours. Maybe nature is the same and we would find that if we tried. I would rather sit by the pond a bit and find peace in the occassional distraction of the acorn falling. I wonder if they think the gods are attacking them when those handfuls of acorns fall. I would think, we would.

    1. It is that contrast that I so often find myself pondering, "X"...is it really such a contrast, though?
There so many similarities between our lives and Nature...both can bring intense or peaceful experiences.
I guess our personal way of perceiving things must be the key to how we experience them.
But, then, I am definitely no expert!

Yes, I imagine we would believe the Gods were attacking from above.
I do often secretly ask myself that when particularly difficult challenges come my way...;)

      Many thanks :))

  2. You are a brilliant writer, dearest Ygraine. You tell a story with only a few lines.
I love the way you added a twist with the bed clothes hanging on the line...and I love acorns!!! We had a 100 year old oak tree that used to drop so many acorns that you had to be careful under that tree.

You will be missed while you take some time away from blogging...but I will look forward to your return, dear friend~

Many Hugs and Lots of Love

    1. Dearest Jan...I do hope you have been well this past week. I have really missed you!
You know, as I sat there beside the pond...just for an instant I was vividly aware of the connection between ourselves and Nature - like it was all part of some Grand Design, hence the bed sheets and the faces of the Gods keeping watch over everything.
We have two rather large oak trees in our garden too...so I know what you mean...you have to be careful when you walk beneath them at this time of year!

Thank you so much, my dear friend!
It is good to be back.:)

      Much Love and Hugs xoxoxo

    1. Oh wouldn't it be great to be a fish...if only for an hour or so?
Your comment has brought to mind that great novel: The Once and Future King, by T. H. White...and how Merlin taught Arthur about shape shifting by turning him into various different creatures.
If only such things were true in "real" life, eh?!

      Many thanks, Anthony! :))
