Remember how we used to believe in dreams?
Now we haven't even the time it seems
to stroll along that Cornish shore
where we pledged we'd be lovers for evermore.
Oh when did we stop seeing the moon and stars,
and begin to bicker like children of Mars?
I can still recall how we used to love -
anywhere, any time, was the time for love.
We never held back, just gave our all.
I remember how I held you oh so tight...
and our hungry kisses all through the night.
Such passion then held us in thrall.
Well look at us now, this old married pair:
think we have it all sussed in our gilt-edged lair.
But is this all our lives have been leading to?
This familiarity that swallowed our dreams
has bred an indifference too.
Oh whatever happened to those reckless nights
when we dared to love beneath city lights?
Now we haven't even the time it seems
to stroll along that Cornish shore
where we pledged we'd be lovers for evermore.

... o, ya ... I used 2 believe in dreams 2 ... now I pay 4 my own bread on my own table ... and that's good ... and it's gonna stay that way ... smiles ... Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
DeleteIndependence...you can't beat it...
Bravo Cat! :))
Eh, hopefully not. I think it is the passion we have to tend and care for. Because passion gives our love ardor, and can lead to a battle or two, but that is all part of it. I dont ever want a love that is too comfortable, you know.
ReplyDeleteHa...maybe that's why all my relationships have been fraught with tension and dispute! lol
DeleteMany thanks for these wise words, "X"...much appreciated.:))
Sadly, this happens in so many relationships; I've been there too. It's hard to come back from indifference. Thank you for expressing the human condition so eloquently and poignantly. Another thank you for visiting Silver Moon Cove, it was lovely to see you there. <3 MW
ReplyDeleteAlways a pleasure to visit, "MW"...I love Silver Moon Cove!
DeleteI've always wondered why relationships have to be so fraught with problems...but now I'm beginning to think it must be some sort of learning curve! *smiles*
Thank you so much, my friend...xoxoxo
quite a poem...recognize myself in some places in this - and when indifference strikes - i rise to the occasion and either invite or drag "us" into an adventure. Going on 45 years and I still love adventures. I love reading your poetry.
ReplyDeleteOh me too, Sandy...I don't think I'll ever tire of adventures!
DeleteI guess that is really the key to a long relationship, isn't it?
Just remember how it was in the beginning...:)
Thank you so much! :))
Aww! The light is always there but one needs to switch it on each day and never let it burn out.
ReplyDeleteOh how true!
DeleteYou make it sound simple...and of course it really is.
Yet we so often complicate it.:/
Thank you for these wonderful words of wisdom, my friend...I so appreciate:))
What a great poem, Ygraine! I agree that we need to switch it on each day, as Onomiroro says.

ReplyDeleteOh thank you, Linda...so much!
DeleteYes, makes a lot of sense...:))
Lovely and sad...yet the pull is still there, or you wouldn't be. I got married at 25 divorced at 30, and never married again....i truly prefer being alone
ReplyDeleteOh Sweetie...I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you.
DeleteBut, as you are happier being alone, then I guess it did all turn out for the best.
Oh I am so in awe of you...I think I would find living alone really difficult.
You are now officially on a pedestal! :))

I think one or the other become emotional cowards as we aged, victims of what others we never thought about once, during those short times that lasted forever under city lights☺
ReplyDeleteWonderful writing..
Think you've "hit the nail on the head", Anthony...some of us do undoubtedly become cowards with the passing of the years.
DeleteThings I wouldn't have hesitated to suggest in the beginning, now often take a considerable amount of courage! ;))
Oh but to return to those city lights...just for a moment...
Beautifully written and so true, dearest Ygraine.
ReplyDeleteWhen you write you always seem to write what I would...if only I could :)
Hugs and Love

Dearest Jan...but your beautiful words and images already far surpass mine...
DeleteOh you are so kind...thank you so, so much.:))
Much Love & Hugs xoxoxo
I am finally getting myself together after a bout of depression. Not very severe...but enough to physically make me sick.
DeleteI am feeling like me once again and this is a good sign ;)
Hugs and Much Love

Very interesting poem depicting life in many families. Some how the passion of younger days seems to fade away when we get old either due to monotony, familiarity or lack of new ideas. To a young person a kiss is enough to reach a climax but to an old couple the same kiss becomes dull and routine.
ReplyDeleteThe basic problem, I think, as we grow old we take the other person for granted. The way we address each other, the way look at each other, the way dress etc.etc. lacks the passion of our younger age.
Recently I read a haiku in a blog which said WE SHOULD LOOK AT THE OLD MIRROR WITH A YOUNGER LOOK. Yes, old people to recover the magic of passion, should change their mind set about love and the way look, talk, dress and act in order to find the excitement, thrill in a passionate love.
Excellent poem. I enjoyed reading this but felt very sorry for people who lose the feeling and excitement of love. Without love we lead a robot like existence.
Best wishes
Oh that is so true, Joseph!
DeleteI hadn't thought of it that way, but yes, it is all too easy to become rather robot-like when in a long term relationship, isn't it?!
Absolutely...to look into an old mirror with young eyes - amazing...and so wise!
Thank you so much...:))
Like the poem. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteHave missed many of your posts. I was kept busy with my works. I am into a place that has a sterile internet connectivity. Hope you are keeping fine.
Oh Dumcho, my dear friend...so good to hear from you again!:))
DeleteDo hope all is going well for you.
You have been much in my thoughts...
So happy you liked the poem.
Thank you so much.:))
