TEDDY BEAR

When I found you in the attic you were threadbare.
On closer inspection it seemed you'd shrunk.

But the smile on your face remained as I remembered it -
like an old soldier's moustache.

Your breath smelled of dust and years of neglect
and one of your poor eyes had drooped.

Oh how I wanted to hug you,
to resume our exclusive closeness

that once soothed me in the dead of night
when vile nightmares tried to claim me

and left me feeling so alone and scared...
but I was afraid of what I'd feel.

Then I probed the archives of your heart
and there discovered a little blonde girl

lovingly cuddling her teddy bear, her Soul-Mate.
Suddenly, my world turned upside down

as, engulfed in aching nostalgia,
I clutched you close to my heart.

  1. Gosh, you almost made me well up there, dear. What a beautiful poem. The last line is simple and yet so gorgeous, because it calls to all of us who had Teddy Bears (or similar toys) when little and found comfort in hugging them.

Thanks for your comment and your birthday wishes.

    Greetings from London.

  4. Lovely, lovely poem, Y ... thinking of my own childhood ... had no toys, and if, they none existent and left behind because of my families frequent travels ... but I still have 2 teddy bears from my now grown kids ... smiles ... and Jenny's doll, I gave away to the itty bitty Chinese girl from across the street ... it took a lot of courage, but good in the end ... I still have Jenny's lil shoes ... Love, cat.

  6. So touching Ygraine. And yes, familiar, beloved objects can be comforting, in times of sorrow and pain.

Sending lots more hugs your way. Take care and try to take some time to just completely chill if you can. You need to keep your strength up dear. Hugs to your husband too.

  7. Nothing tells a gentler story of private comfort than a stuffed toy deformed by a million hugs.

  9. wow, i just LOVE this - my great niece Hannah has a bear, Mama Bear - Hannah is 9. That bear I am sure has now taken on a consciousness of it's own - it soothes and comforts Hannah through all kinds of adventures in life - it cheers her on and is always there for her. Mama Bear has been sewn back together so many times. I'm sure Hannah will have it the rest of her life. Your poem is beautiful and bittersweet and just awesome.

  14. How glad I am to find yet another adult who understands a child's need to hold a dear toy even after a number of years have passed.

  19. Lovely photo and a wonderful poem. Very nostalgic.

This poem reminds me of my younger days when I was carefree without any problems and worries. As we grow older we go back often to our childhood days as a source of comfort and joy.

    Best wishes
