ELECTION DAY

Oh what a drag!

Election day is here again.
For who to vote, I'm racking my brain.
While sifting through each canvassing flyer,
I find of their blarney I rapidly tire.
Such extravagant claims each one makes
in an effort to top popularity stakes.
It's strange how they promise the world to us
when they call at our homes and make such a fuss
of each and everyone living there,
and offer to our burdens personally bear.
For our champions they suddenly claim to be -
yes, today they're devoted to you and me,
whereas only yesterday in the street
they would cross the road rather than meet
our gaze in case we should ask them why
last campaign's promises were allowed to die.
But now they expect us to believe
from society's troubles they'll bring reprieve.
Come on guys - we're not stupid you know,
the trick you're playing is oh so low!
We're aware your ambition is personal glory,
whether Labour, Lib. Dem., or even Tory.
Is it any wonder the turnout's so poor,
in spite of your chauffeuring us door-to-door?
Can you really not see we've had enough
of your endless policies that turn out to be duff?
So give us a break and for once tell the truth.
We're sick of false hope - now how about some proof?

Oh what a drag!

  1. ugh. have fun voting...its a shame we have to vote for who they have picked it can seem like the lesser of two evils at times....and yeah, they only care about us when they need our vote...sadly...i am rather disenfranchised with the whole political process...we need a major over haul..

    1. My sentiments exactly, Brian...that overhaul is seriously overdue!
Perhaps one day we'll get some all-important truth - although I won't hold my breath! :/

      Many thanks:)

    Good luck on the voting.

    1. Oh thank you so much, Margie. You are so kind!
Yes, it would be nice if we could take people in authority at face value and trust them, wouldn't it?
Ever the optimist, I still keep hoping...:)

  4. You have expressed exactly how I feel about voting, Ygraine! I cannot stop voting because it is my chance, my right to have my say...but I often wonder if my vote truly counts. I feel that the very least I must do is try~

    1. Me too, Jan. When I find myself thinking "What's the point?" I remember those brave women who risked their lives so we could have the vote.
It would seen so disrespectful to just give up...so I still cast mine.
As to whether it really counts though...who can tell...?

  5. I echo Brian's sentiment - sometimes it really does seem as if we are voting for the lesser or two evils. But I always vote nonetheless because I know there are a lot of people in the world who do not have that privilege. It is for that reason that I never take it for granted.

    1. Yes, I do agree.
As I just mentioned to Jan, I sometimes wonder if it is worth the effort, but then I think of those who fought tooth and nail to win the vote for womankind and feel rather guilty at even had such a thought.
I do wish the candidates would tell the truth though...it would make the process so much simpler! :)

  6. Don't bother, govt officials are puppets, and by the way , go away, gorgeous as you are standing there, they will come and vote, we are not kids anymore we can govern ourselves better than they ever could....The only reason I would ever vote would be if somehow a Nazi party showed up than I'd vote like crazy for anybody but, but in the meantime, where I am, no difference, not one bit, i promise go go away gorgeous before someone stops just to check you out, you're a babe...

    1. Haha...I wasn't intending to be in the photo, but then thought it would prove I'd actually been there and cast my vote!
Oh it really is something of a lottery, isn't it?
It ties my brain in knots...reading all the literature, trying to decide.
I eventually choose the one who sounds most genuine...well, that's all you can do isn't it?!
Ha...think they'd be rather disappointed...I'm too old to be a babe...but thank you anyway! *smiles*

  7. Your every word rings true.... Unfortunately those available to vote for or against probably couldn’t get into office if they told the truth too.

    1. That is SO true, Anthony!
The entire arena of politics seems to me to be based on a web of lies...and half-truths at the very best.
It is a sorry state of affairs for the rest of us...:/

  8. Fun poem. I just cast my vote. I really do sympathise with you and echo your feelings. At the same time, if I don't vote, I'll be ceding power to someone else who might have something nasty in store for me.

    Greetings from London.

    1. Yes...that is the problem, isn't it?
It really is a mine field...it did help, though, to write a tongue-in-cheek poem...somehow made it all feel less serious!

And, on reflection, it is probably almost as difficult for those in office...I mean, you can't please everyone, can you?! *smiles*

Greetings from a rather damp Hampshire!:)
