INVASION

Window shopping in Farnham.
Walking down the high street
on a warm autumn day
in lace vest and mini skirt.
A woman in purdah blocks my path.
"Hi," I smile at her.
But her eyes - all I can see of her -
are filled with scorn, hatred even,
as if I am something sub human:
an abomination that should be
stoned - or better still, doused in petrol
and burned alive.

Hostile black eyes continue
to pierce me from head to toe,
projecting the desire to erase
this demon, this canker
from the face of an Earth
exclusively Allah's.
When she finally speaks
in broken English, her words
are spat at me:
"You disgusting!
Where you from?"
"Here," I reply. "This is my country."

  1. I am of a peaceful nature, I am against violence, but would i have been there i would have slapped her and told her 'you madame are repugnant to my eyes' and maybe spit. She's just threatened by your beauty your grace, the fact that you're bloody going to wear want you want, when you want and as short as you want with you gorgeous long blong hair and lovely eyes well, there will always be an envious woman. I say don't respond just put your head up and leave this trash behind.....you're too lovely for old bittie, love, me xoxoxo

    1. Sadly, this sort of experience is becoming more and more commonplace here, not just for me, but for so many people.
I can't really understand why. We have welcomed these people into our country, and yet they seem to hate us and our culture.
      Very strange.
Thank you so much for understanding...and for fighting my corner, Sweetie!
Oh if only there could be more tolerance between human beings, eh?

  2. what an interesting interaction...i wonder at such hatred...why did she assume perhaps you were from somewhere else? and if you were, why the hostility....

    1. Wish I could answer those questions...
Why WOULD someone take an instant aversion to a complete stranger...maybe she has been wronged by someone who looks similar?
      Wish I knew...:/

      Many thanks.

      Have a Great Weekend :)

  3. Religions hate expressions of freedom, in all forms but their own. Lucky to live in a country where religions can for the most part be ignored.
    Wonderful poem.

    1. Do you know, Anthony...I think you've just supplied the answer!
A woman not in purdah out in the street, in full view of everyone passing by.
But, surely, we are meant to be a multi-cultural nation...
Think I'll emigrate to the USA!! *smiles*

      Many thanks, Anthony:)

  4. Oh wow, was this written from true events? If so, I am so saddened that she would have treated someone that way...

    1. Afraid so, Keith.
As I just said to Lorraine, this sort of reaction is becoming increasingly commonplace these days...makes me feel quite uneasy when I am around veiled women...which is sad, because I would never dream of judging anyone according to race or religion.
In fact I find it really interesting to learn about other cultures.

      Many thanks.

    2. This is so very sad! I have to say, even where I live, I am finding this is happening to me with other races. I am like you Ygraine, I have never judged anyone on race or religion, or how they look like, or how much money they have! It's your soul that counts! I am sending you a big hug and many blessings! Keep being you! xoxoxo

    4. Oh Sweetie...you are so, so kind...your words truly touch my heart.
Thank you so much for understanding...and I totally agree...it is the person's Soul that counts...
and yours is so gentle and loving. That much comes across very clearly in your beautiful paintings.
      Now...I am intrigued!
I have been away for a few days, so haven't visited your blog...I am on my way now...:)

  5. Hate and scorn seem to be in vogue now, my gentle and sweet friend. If this was a true happening I am so sorry that when you offered a smile and a friendly greeting, that you received wrath from someone unknown full of anger and hate~

Note: I am deleting my two blogs but I have created a new blog for all of my art, crafts, photography and writings.

My greatest wish for our World is that we will all someday live together in tolerance and love...a rather impossible dream as things stand at present...but if we keep hoping...?

Am looking forward to visiting your new blog!

Thank you so much, dear friend. :)

  6. Damn, that was a nasty encounter. Nobody has the right to do that. I don't care where they come from or what their problems are. I hate to think what I would have done.

    Greetings from London.

    1. It just makes me feel so sad, CiL...to think of someone so eaten up with bitterness...and what that may be doing to their health - both physical and Spiritual.
It is hard not to react...but then I think of how much the person must already be suffering...

      Many thanks.

      Have a Great Weekend.:)

  7. Not sure if this woman's outburst was a criticism or compliment burnt to charcoal by her own personal longing. Either way, we're going to have to be patient.

    1. Yes...you are right...patience is the only way.
We'll probably never know the reasons, so there is no point dwelling on it.
      Communication is needed, I believe...good, old-fashioned, honest communication! :)

      Thank you Geo.

      Have a Great Weekend :)

  9. Sweety I just need to let you know that my laptop is showing signs of crashing so I have to get rid of my photos on google and just keep a few to keep my blog going maybe sometimes I'll just say what's on my mind or write something, I don't mind that i can't show my beautiful photos because I've lost so much in so many crashes that I can't bear it, but i'll keep my blog mostly because i couldn't bare not visiting all my dear friends so my blog might not be that interesting but it's the only way I can visit and I love you so much

  13. Well dear Ygraine unfortunately it is the world we live in today :(
Be kind to people you don't know what they going through seems to be old school
Unfortunately not everyone is sympathetic or has empathy anymore
and there is no such thing as good neighbours anymore either.
Just take care of yourself and ignore people who can't accept you as you are :)

    1. It really is a sad state of affairs, isn't it?
How I often yearn for those far-off days of my childhood, when everyone cared for and were happy to help everyone else. Does seem they've gone forever, doesn't it?
But I will never stop caring...and it means so much to me that you do too.
Thank you, dear Rose...from the heart.:)
