LYONESSQUE

A massive tidal wave devastated Portsmouth.
From an attic window the torrent we watched
in sheer terror as it swamped street after street,
destroying all in it's path.

We cringed as the city was plunged into darkness,
bright lights extinguished in their watery grave,
and wondered would ever again we see
the high street, pier, or Spinnaker Tower.

There were no sirens, no emergency services,
no helicopters airborne - the last hope of salvation.
Neither were there screams of drowning victims,
just an eerie silence as Poseidon surfed in.

His trident held aloft in the dark sky in wrath,
He took His revenge in the sea's fury:
sank all the trawlers that had ravaged His kingdom,
then smashed Nelson's Victory to smithereens.

Just an idea that occurred to me while watching a TV documentary about over fishing...the sea's revenge, so to speak! *chuckles* :)

  4. An excellent and elegant reminder that there should be more efficient tsunami warning systems on all coasts (including mine, California's), and certainly in south and west England.

    1. Yes...as I spend so much time in south west Cornwall, I am often conscious of the power of the Atlanic as it smashes against the cliffs, sending whole sections of rock cascading down into the sea.
I am convinced that, should a tsunami hit the region, the entire peninsula would be lost...a really sobering thought.

      Many thanks, Geo :)

This poem crashed out at me like lion and each image rich, sharp, hard and potent..a real intensity yet also a gentle sorrow inbetween the lines. Very beautiful and powerful and emotionally gripping...I felt INside the experience ...amazing!

  10. geez...what a horrific thing it would be to watch...the gods fury at what had been done to their realm....something that i would hope to never witness...watching the tsunami ravage japan every year in earth science is enough for me...
