EMISSARY

Northern hemisphere winter:
stasis in ice
and feather-patterned windows.

Parched
alabaster skin, cracked,
numb, circulation impeded.

Nature's abandonment -
how forsaken we are!
Blue fingertips and nose. Concrete walls

disintegrating: sand regressed
to molecular rock
from warmer times I cannot reach

when sun rose high,
had warmth
and short shadows.

Lungfuls of air were painless then,
just invigorating.
Something stirs

within Earth's core -
an excitement, anticipation.
Inexplicable.

And so I
dig deep, find Creation's impulse.
Evolution's call

is in the blood
and I
am the emissary:

the tiny green shoot
that splits the rock-hard soil
to speak

of life eternal.

  1. Hi Ygraine..Amazing!!... so deeply beautiful...I loved every moment of it..and the picture to match is stunning. There is something uniquely-powerful in these words that is tugging at me today....I love the rhythm and movement of words along with the imageries ..words always fail..but for me..all of your poems touch me uniquely...and this one feels deep and strong...awesome and inspiring!
    Hugs.

  4. You have a wonderful skill of infusing a personality into nature --both personalizing and universalizing the tremendous operations of the planet. My compliments and admiration.

  15. It's death and rebirth. Loved your poem because you took me places. It's somewhat bendy, your poem is. I couldn't read it like a straight line going from start to finish. Just before I thought it was going to end you introduced the green shoot. Marvellous. Thanks.

    Greetings from London.

    1. Funny you should find this "bendy"...as I wrote it, it felt disjointed.
Whatever I did with it, it still felt awkward...as if it had a life of it's own...so in the end, I just let it be!
      Many thanks, CiL:)

      Have a great Tuesday.
