PUPATION

You bought me a red dress
a decade-and-a-half ago in the January sales.

In the bedroom behind white wardrobe doors,
it hangs like a sun-drying tomato.

New still in theory, it smells of the perfume
I wore when I tried it on - and years of various moth repellents.

On a hanger, suspended in the darkness,
red frills have come to accept the role of servants-in-waiting,

but unadjusted shoulder straps envy their older neighbours
who have taken on the dimensions of human form.

When red silk finally is worn, eyes and fingers bestow
the attention so avidly craved, and younger dresses

learn that newness and fashion are irrelevant, long before they're worn.
"I love that retro dress! Is it new?"..."Yes," I reply, "it is."

    1. Funny you should say that, Geo...I began writing about the dress, then by the end I found myself thinking AS the dress...crazy or what?!
Guess some poems are just like that!

  10. so true - this retro poem of yours and i love how everything old is new again. I just wished I never had given away my IBM selectric typewriters...I miss them and would love to type again and feel the experience of putting a page in the typewriter and have a finished product right off the press without having to print it out. Love your poetry.

    1. Gosh...yes...those were the days, weren't they?!
I remember typing an entire novel on my old typewriter - no mean task for the inexperienced typist I was then...you wouldn't believe how many mistakes I had to correct! ;)
Many thanks, my dear friend! :))

    2. wow, you wrote a novel! DIdn't know that - maybe u have mentioned it somewhere on your blog. Well I hope it was an electric and not a manual I could never have worked on those. I shutter to think the mistakes I must have made on medical records (I was a transcriptionist for doctors) way back when...because now I write something and it almost always has typos if I'm not really typing carefully. ugh...

      Delete
    3. Afraid it was a manual...hence the problems with all those typos!
Maybe that's partly why I have collected so many rejection slips over the years! lol

  11. Aww! The old sure becomes new and newer than what's new when tended to :).

Hope you're having a great weekend?

Oh such brilliant Haiku...I love it's flowing movement: sights...transforming gracefully into thought-form...then flowing through pen...
      Incredibly evocative!

  17. Hi Ygraine...wow, so beautiful..this poem warmed my heart, i feel mesmerized by this gorgeous red dress now. How I loved the title too..and connecting with the backstory of this poem..feels romantic..I love how it still smells like perfume..and the line..suspended in darkness..quite a vision! It is amazing how an outfit can create a nostalgic feeling and carry emotion/experiences/memories...very powerful! Loved it!
    Shine on...
I feel like wearing something red now!! Thanks for inspiring your magic!!

Namaste kindred sister..wishing you magical rest of October..and Blessings to you during this sacred time.
