CONTRACEPTION

Little white pill ingested daily
and I think, "Am I safe?"

And it vouches for the month as if akin to the days.
Professor of barrenness,

it purges my reproductive tract
like a powerful laxative.

The eggs simply disappear
as stars into a black hole,

leaving our passion free
to go unchecked without consequence - yet,

are we not guilty of denying all the bodiless Souls
the corporality they crave?

Frantically they swirl around us
here in the darkness
between duvet and mattress,

for they truly believe we are potential gods
capable of providing new life,
instead of the mere mortal impostors that we are.

Oh how they'd love to penetrate
the rich red velvet warmth

of uterine interior
and burrow deep into it's nurturing wall.

But don't they realise the cataclysm has already occurred,
leaving only a sterile wasteland?

Frustrated, they scream and scream in our ears
and curse all the newborn babes
out of bitterest envy.

We never hear them, though.
We are far too absorbed
in our fleeting moment of bliss

to even consider the grave implications
of our rising Karmic Debt.

  2. A brave poem. Two of my grandchildren were abandoned by their birth mother at hospital and adopted by my son and his partner. Not all children are so fortunate. Birth control is an unfortunate necessity of our time --and certainly a difficult decision of women concerning their own futures-- but you bring the issue into remarkable focus. You've done some good here, describing the incredible amount of thought that must attend the issue. Thanks.

    1. Oh that is so sad, Geo...those poor abandoned babies. It must have been a very difficult time for you as a family. I do so feel for you all.
Fortunately, I never had to face the dilemma of this poem's "I"...as I had a very difficult time conceiving...and then when I did manage it I miscarried nine times, then lost my first born daughter at two weeks old...before finally giving birth to my son.
The inspiration for this poem came from the Catholic attitude to birth control in an old Irish movie I watched recently...it made me consider how it would feel to be in that difficult situation. It was hard to imagine.
      Thank you so much...:))

    1. Oh gosh...you've encouraged me to think about the issue even more deeply now, Manuel!
Yes, thinking about those fifty million...and each time only one can be successful even without contraception...but then, imagine if all were successful each time. The world would be overpopulated within a week!
I guess Nature will always take control - in one way or another.
Perhaps we are too hard on ourselves.

      Thank you so much.:))

  9. I am feeling "speechless right now" dear ygraine!

this is the topic which used to be counted as sin here many years ago but now even in villages and small towns women with counseling of their doctor restraining the more births than two or hardly three.

I imagined the few countries where freedom has given the gift of "free sex" without limit of any kind. How desastrious are the consequences ,anybody thinking about it???

I never saw any poet with outstanding ability to dealing with numerous topics and each time brilliance is guaranteed!

    1. Dearest Baili...thank you so much for sharing your opinions on this somewhat sensitive subject.
I have always felt uncomfortable about birth control...or rather, it's consequences.
I never really needed it (please see my reply to Geo, above), as conceiving was difficult for me...but I believe very strongly in re-incarnation, and so wonder how it would affect those Souls waiting for an opportunity to be re-born.
But, of course...on the other hand, there is always the argument for avoiding over population.
      Yes, a difficult choice.

      Big Hugs.:))
