DRUMMER BOY

That endless baking summer in Wales, you vanished
nightly until the early hours
with a faceless, anonymous someone

who probably never even suspected my existence.
I could easily picture how you'd come across:
the vulnerable, hard-done-by, would-be lover

who desperately needed rescuing from himself
and his arduous lifestyle on tour with the band.
Oh yes, you'd have been carried away as you always were

by the romantic themes of your own songs. And I knew
she'd have been taken in, just as I had -
you could be so convincing in your philandering.

"Your eyes have captured my very Soul," you'd croon,
whilst leaning toward her and caressing her face.
Back then, I was consumed with jealousy.

Now, I wear armour six feet thick.

  1. This is so wonderful in spite of the painful memories back when even six feet wouldn’t have been enough armor to avoid the hurt.

  2. Alas, the inevitable hurt of loving too much, eh?
That 19 year old me was too much the hopeless romantic!😉
So true, even those six feet have cracks that allow the arrows of love to penetrate...always to our detriment!!
So happy you enjoyed, Anthony...and my heartfelt thanks!😊😊

  8. wow , another one that says a lot. I wonder if he is lonely today, with many women and their armor six feet thick walking away from him and toward the good life.

  9. I've sometimes wondered that myself, Sandy. I can't imagine him being alone though, women just seemed to find him irresistible!
Don't think I'd accept that kind of behaviour now, but at nineteen...I was so naive.
    Thank you so much.😊😊
