BIN MEN

Midway up from Forest Road
and midway down from oak-bordered green
where children play and dogs frolic,
dressed in coveralls the bin men toil.
They drag our bins to the kerb edge
and then empty them into their truck.

                                          Rain soaks their clothing
and runs down the street in rivers.
On the road named after a tree, deep cracks
form matchstalk men in aged tarmac.
The houses are pink and uniform, their inhabitants insular.

While the operatives dispose of our garbage,
where do their minds travel? To sunny climes
I imagine, or Saturday nights with friends at the pub.
They discuss the weather, and admire a pretty girl passing by.

The rain eases, sun peeps through a cloud
and a shard of light encloses them. Weather beaten
faces break into smiles. These men

                                           in boring occupation
put me to shame. Uncomplaining, down-to-earth,
they teach the the pretentious part of me
an important lesson: be yourself - you are good enough as you are

and, anyway, everyone else is already taken...

Wishing you all Happy Holidays...with lots of love and hugs xxx

  1. HaHa! Bin men..ALL they ever do is..
'Seek Refuge'..My next door neighbour is
a bin man..Sorry..A waste collector, sanitation
worker, dustman, binman (in the UK), garbageman
or trashman (in the USA) is a person employed by
a public or private enterprise to collect and
dispose of waste (refuse) and recyclables from
    residential, commercial, industrial or other
collection site for further processing and waste ...!
(What a lot of 'bull' that was)...

Lo and behold tomorrow..Friday..is recycling day,
Out with those horrid Wheelie bins..like washing
machines they must be the worst invention ever...!
    Hate them...! :(.

HaHa! "Anything else to say Willie"..."Nope, what
l've already said is a load of rubbish anyway"...
    Bin men jokes are endless....!
There isn’t much training involved in being a garbage
man...You just pick it up as you go along...

What do you call a group of baby garbage bins?
    A litter...

I'm trying to start a chewing gum recycling company...
I just need a little help getting it off the ground...

    That's it..I'm off..before l get thrown off...! :o).
    Ho Ho Ho🎅 🎶 🔔 Jingle Bells 🔔 🎶 Merry Christmas!

    2. Well..Did a bit of stand up..Purely
      Add~lib..also wrote scrips for other
comedians..But..dance was my true love, so
      that's what l took to..For 8yrs! Goodness!
      That long..HeHe! Slow~slow~quick~quick~slow!
Little more advanced than that though..! 🎅 🎄

    3. I can believe you wrote scripts...you really do have a talent for telling genuinely funny jokes! :) :)

    4. Always remember Frank Spencer on
      'Some Mothers Do Have Them'...
      Learning to dance...He kept saying
      to himself.."Side together..Point..
      Side together..point". HeHe! So there's
      a start..
And..Yes! Even at my age..l can still
      do a little 'break' dancing..though it's
on the dining room carpet now..! AND!
      a lot slower..HeHe!

When your clothes are soaked, I will be your sun drying and warming you on this road that leads us to find isolated inhabitants. But we, because of fate, unite our lives, so that there is no loneliness between us!
    Merry Christmas my beautiful friend!

  7. A very necessary occupation that mostly happens without a simple thank you from those who scream and rant if the bin men or women happen to be late or cannot make it at all because their truck broke down.
They need that brew and some laughs and wonderful people like you my dearest Ygraine who remember them with your writings and with heart felt thanks ❤

    Big Hugs and Love ❤🎄❤☃❤🎅❤🎁❤

    1. Yes, I often wonder how we'd all manage without people like these...they are totally indispensable. And yet...there are some who treat them so poorly.
That is exactly how I was thinking, as I watched them at work from my window...and this poem was conceived!
Oh thank you, my beautiful Jan...for these kind words.:))

      Happy Christmas!!

  18. this touched my soul so deep dear Ygraine!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you are always such an inspiration my dear special friend! how lovely this world will be if all will think same way as you do dear friend!
i can relate as i used to ponder upon them a lot in past ,i still do but not with that extreme
those days i would think i wish we all clean our mess by ourselves !so no one can think of any one low just because of they are doing their job for living
    hugs!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. what a wonderful description of what would appear to be a hard and tedious job that they do. I have often thought of our guys who take the trash away and realize not only do they do their job in all kinds of weather and dangerous conditiosn on the mountain roads but also how they entertain young kids like my grandson who would never miss hanging out at the window on trash day. He loves the guys and their trucks.
