"It's only a pigeon," you said.
And the casual way you said it shocked me.
Through your eyes it was a non-entity.
Birds of any kind were merely things: unintelligent
and lacking the capacity to feel either pleasure or pain.
In fact anything feathered, in your opinion,
had no real reason for existing at all.
It was if they were some freak accident of Nature,
an experiment gone awry. Even common sparrows
were no more than an irritating nuisance.
Their chirping grated on your nerves
when you wanted to lie in. Impossible for you
to comprehend their discomfort
on frosty mornings. You were a camera
capturing images that lacked any physical reality.
I felt my world shift from yours.
The pigeon scrutinized us intently
like a scientist observing the multiplication
of a deadly virus, it's gaze fearful yet compassionate.
It's understanding
filled me with a powerful sense of connection
I had never experienced before. Enlightenment
came that day in the Nature Reserve.
Your intense aversion to pigeons:
"They are vermin that should be eradicated!"
Such rank hypocrisy! I saw red.
"No, we are the vermin. Look around you.
It's humanity who are killing the planet!"
The pigeon crooned in agreement.
Suddenly it swooped up, flew between us
and perched on a branch, still watching us.
And I could've sworn it shook it's head
as you carelessly tossed your cigarette butt
into a nearby hedge...
Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rue!ππ
DeleteHave a great weekend.

Well..l have to put my hand up and say..
ReplyDeleteYes! I am a hypocrite...
I would never harm or kill an animal..
Never! HeHe! A few people over the years,
l've thought about it..But! Animals..NO!
When driving and a pheasant or rabbit is
in the road..l slow down/stop/toot my horn..
and carry on..
I live next door to a gamekeeper..he 87yrs
old and still works up on the farm, though
part time now!
At the end of June he took delivery of
2,400 pheasant chicks..raising them for the
current shoots..posh people come down from
London..pay a £1,000 for a days shoot..they
are entitled to take a brace home..but..they
never bother..To posh see..! :(
So..a lot of pheasants come my way, including
partridge, rabbit, another such game..including
rook, jay and squirrel..!
After all..why should this meat go to waste...
But! You won't find me hiding behind a bale of
hay, with a 12bore in me hand, waiting for pheasants
to be driven by the 'beaters' in my direction..! :).
But! If such food comes my way..deceased..dead..no more,
then out comes my trusty blade, and there plucked, gutted,
cleaned, jointed and put into my roadkill freezer..
Oh! Yes! I'm partial to picking up roadkill too...
HaHa! Am l weird? Of course l am..are'nt you...???

So relieved to hear you don't kill, Willie!
DeleteLike you, yes, I do eat meat (although am a guilty meat eater) but if I had to kill it myself, then I would be completely vegetarian. Yes, I know, a hypocrite!π
I think that if I ever ran an animal over, I would find it difficult to live with. I live in fear of that kind of thing, so drive as little as I can!
"A hypocrite AND a coward!" I hear you say.
Yes, that's me, I'm afraid! Lol
Have a super day!ππ
HeHe! Perhaps we ought to form a club..!
DeleteThe Game for Anything Club...! πππππ
I think you've a great idea there, Willie!! Lol
DeleteNothing should be killed for no reason.
ReplyDeleteAround here they are killing doves...legally!!!
Pretty ironic when you realize that they are a sign of peace.
It turns my stomach how some kill and find pleasure in it.
Beautifully written my dear friend...and great "food for thought!"
Hugs and Much Love
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I, too, eat meat and so I may be a bit of a hypocrite, too.
Dearest Jan...my heartfelt thanks.
DeleteYes, I guess it is in our nature to be meat eaters... doesn't stop us feeling guilty about it at times though, does it?!
Killing doves? Oh that is dreadful...like our badger culling here. So upsettingπ’
Do have a magical Sunday, my beautiful friend!ππ
Much love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

ReplyDeleteSome people are from war ... Doves are always of peace!
Some people don't understand anything, why they can't fly and only the wise can do what they dream!
Nice text!
Kisses !!!
Oh thank you, Doug...so much...for these wise, wise words!ππ
DeleteKisses back xxx
I am like you, eat meat, but I would never kill or harm any animal! About pigeons, we have really a lot of them in my city.Beautifully written as always! Have a lovely weekend ☺
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of pigeons here too, especially in our garden!π
DeleteI do love then though. We have one that perches on the top branch of one of our oak trees, every morning. So cute!!ππ

I especially like this. Wonderful. A great way of judging another’s human’s character, and deciding who and who not to be around.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you, Anthony...I truly appreciate that!ππ
DeleteBuon fine settimana.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, Giancarlo!ππ
DeleteOh WOW...you do me such an honour...I have always considered my poetry to be simple and rather lacking in depth. Oh thank you...so, so much. I truly appreciate your kind words of encouragement!ππ
ReplyDeleteVisiting your blog is one of my greatest pleasures...
What an amazing amazing poem. I have often cringed when I've read or heard someone call a pigeon a flying rat. I find pigeons actually beautiful with their irridescent patch of colors around their neck (some of them). I really love what you wrote. At the moment I'm in a love affair with leaves....And.....all it took was the desire to know more about them as I for the first time spotted some beauty within the leaf as it changes. I've always loved fall colors but even more so now.
ReplyDeleteOh how kind...thank you so much, Sandy!ππ
DeleteYes, I agree...pigeons appear to be much maligned here. Very undeserved, I think!
I love leaves too. Always have. All those stunning colour changes as Autumn progresses...amazing!!
Have a fabulous day xxx
I can't believe that I was talking to my girlfriend about something similar yesterday as we walked in Kew Gardens. Great poem. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Well, you know what they say..."Great minds think alike!!" Lol
DeleteThank you so much, my friend!ππ
Greetings from Hampshire.

__ When I was a youngster I met my first pigeon, "street cleaners", they were then called in Torrington Connecticut. Since that time I've seen pigeons as natural city friends... that was about 1949. Thanks for the old time look-back "Y"!
I love them! They are frequent visitors to our garden, and they never fail to amuse us!
DeleteSo glad you enjoyed, Doug...and thank you so much!ππ
Have a super day!
So many seem to view pigeons as flying rats!
ReplyDeleteWe have some visit the garden and it's always interesting to watch them.
Once again I enjoyed your words, thank you.
All the best Jan
Yes, I've heard that too...poor pigeons!π
DeleteI love watching them when they visit our garden...they are so entertaining...natural clowns!! Lol
Thank you so much! ππ

animals just seem to know that cleanliness is important, animals just seem to know that discipline is very valuable, then what about us?
ReplyDeleteIndeed! I think there is a lot we could learn from the animal kingdom...
DeleteMany thanks ππ
if life is always accompanied by cleanliness, then the disease must be easily cured, right?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely...at least, in theory! π
DeleteMany thanks ππ
i am always STUNNED by your CAPACITY to symbolize and to narrate so powerfully and so beautifully dear Ygraine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletethis is mighty and intriguing poetry :) you connected the various aspects of emotions sublimely as always
pigeons are common here and mostly pet by youngsters in villages and cities as well
i can never consider them a freaked accident of nature ,i will question their wit who believe it
hope all is smooth in your lovely world my beautiful talented friend :)
wishing you more peace and happiness in days ahead !
hugs!!!!
Dearest Baili, oh thank you so much!ππ
DeleteYes, me too...I really dislike it when some people suggest that other species have no right to be sharing the planet with us!
Our Creator created everything we see around us, so surely we should respect His work??
I do so hope all is good with you, my wonderful Friend!ππ
Sending you much love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
