THE GREEN MAN

Watercolour by A.P. Barrow

He was never meant to be a cartoon character.
He is a noble Spirit of the Forest
to all those whose minds have remained open
to the Old Gods, the old ways of the Ancestors.

Still, he remains our powerful protector,
one of our greatest teachers: Nature's map
of the cosmos within each Soul,
clothed in leaf and bark and vine.

Vibrant green and composed of Oak,
he is Herne's messenger - less a creation of man,
more pure Elemental: wildly loyal
to the Druids of Clas Myrddin, both past and present.

And how he gasps at our selfishness, bleeding sap, as our
wanton destruction of this precious blue globe tortures him.
Now, more than ever, we need to unearth our roots.
He is our final, our only, hope.

  1. Ygraine,
May the noble spirit of the forest find the answers within each soul, translating the past and present of each one of us. And then, let him rest in his sigh of relief (but without being selfish), so that we can all continue to discover the right roots to leave this forest with new future hopes.

  2. How very true.
He is elemental. Beautiful. Powerful. And demands respect (and we would ALL be better off is he received that respect).
    Huge hugs.

  7. Our selfishness, in fact, is an evil sap that destroys the best of nature. Wait for the Forest Spirit to help us ...?
I really liked your poem, it's brilliant. Your poetry is very strong and, at the same time, extremely sensitive.
Dear Ygraine, have a nice weekend.
    Kisses.

  10. Poignant and touching poetry dear Ygraine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i share your grief for the destruction of nature and for the opposing laws of nature by man
you said it so beautifully and powerfully as always my dear talented wonderful friend!
we are part of nature and by going against this fact we are cutting the branch on that we have nested this is pitiful indeed
i wish we can realize that Loss is all our's
hope you doing good by the grace of Lord my friend
wishing you more joys and peace with ever lasting health!

    1. My dearest friend...it is almost as if we read each other's thoughts! That is exactly how I feel about our callous disregard of Nature...and it's deep disrespect for our Creator.😢
Whenever I see trees being torn down, it gives me such emotional and even physical pain. When, I so often ask, will mankind understand...that what we do to Nature and to each other, we do to ourselves also?
Such a sad state of affairs...
Oh thank you so much for your understanding, and such kind words...I appreciate it so much!😊😊

Wishing you and yours much happiness and health too!

All my love and hugs ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  13. What an intriguing poem to come from the painting - or painting from the poem! Both great creative artworks :)

Hope you are having a great weekend :) We celebrated our wedding anniversary yesterday, just at home with takeaway but it was nice :)

  14. Yes, indeed, the painting was based upon the ancient tradition of a Forest Guardian.
This is the craziest Green Man I have ever seen though!! 😉😉
